Electrical Stimulation Therapy

PAIN MANAGEMENT CARE

Electrical Stimulation

Although it may sound revolutionary, electrical stimulation therapy is actually a form of pain management therapy that has been used to manage pain since the 1960s. Electrodes strategically placed near the source of pain direct small electrical pulses to interrupt the pain signals being sent from the problem nerves to the brain. The prevention of the pain message transmission stops the patient from experiencing the pain.

How effective electrical stimulation is depends on the patient, the type of pain they are experiencing, the location of the pain and the severity of their pain.

In addition to disrupting the pain signals being sent to the brain, electrical stimulation therapy is also believed to cause the release of endorphins, which act as the body’s own natural pain relievers.

In addition to pain management, there are also some studies that suggest electrical stimulation therapy may help increase muscle mass. Although the gains in muscle mass and muscle function are slight in comparison to the pain relief, it’s still a valuable ancillary benefit for a therapy frequently used to help people regain pain-free function and mobility after a serious accident injury.

Atlas Spine & Rehab frequently provides electrical stimulation therapy in conjunction with other pain management treatments as a holistic part of a patient’s recovery strategy. We’re always happy to work with chiropractors, neurologist, orthopedists and personal injury attorneys in the recovery of their patients and clients.
